The Center for Symbolic Studies is situated in the Hudson Valley/Catskill Bioregion, near New Paltz, New York (80 miles north of New York City and 75 miles south of Albany).
From the South via New Paltz / Thruway
Take NYS Thruway to Exit 18 (New Paltz). Make a left onto Rte 299 (Main Street) and follow it through the town of New Paltz. At the 5th traffic light (intersection with Rte 32, Mobil station on right) turn right onto Rte 32N; continue about 5 miles, cross a steel bridge (over the Wallkill).
On your left will be River Road, turn left on River Road; continue several blocks to its end, where it intersects with Springtown Road. You will see the Center’s sign on the left side of the crossroad, (a tall green sign between two posts, saying “Stone Mountain Farm” and “Center for Symbolic Studies”). Cross Springtown and continue straight ahead on River Road Extension.
Continue under the stone bridge onto the Farm, where you will see a second sign with a cedar shake roof. On your left will be a pasture used for parking for large events; the main parking lot (A) will be a short distance up the road to your right. The Seminar Center, MovementSpace and OutdoorStage will be just past the parking lot, where you will see two more tall green signs; turn right up the hill (there is limited parking at the top of the hill for smaller programs, and for those who need ready access). Welcome!
From Kingston/Woodstock via Rte 32
If you are coming from the Kingston/Woodstock area, take Rte 32 South through Rosendale, across the steel bridge over the Rondout, continue up the hill into Tillson. Make the right onto Tillson Road (just before Postage Inn on left). Follow Tillson Road several blocks to its end, where it makes a T intersection with Springtown Road (on your right will be the Tillson Firehouse, on your left a school bus depot, Tillson Market will be facing you); turn left on Springtown, to go south for about 1/2 mile, back towards River Road.
When you reach the intersection of River Road and Springtown Road, you will see the Center’s sign to your right, facing River Road (a tall green sign between two posts, saying “Stone Mountain Farm” and “Center for Symbolic Studies”). Turn right onto River Road Extension, and continue as above.

The Center for Symbolic Studies is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) healing and performing arts center exploring the psyche through the window of myth. Our mission is to provide a theater of opportunities for conscious myth-making, leading to personal growth and communal awareness. We see this as essential to a creative participation in the richness and variety of human cultures and in our extended ecological family.
"Myth is the secret opening through which the inexhaustible energies of the cosmos pour into human cultural manifestation. Religions, philosophies, the arts, the social forms of primitive and historic man, prime discoveries in science and technology, the very dreams that blister sleep all boil up from the basic magic ring of myth." — Joseph Campbell
